Ask three volleyball coaches how many substitutions they get per set and you may get three different answers — because they may all be right. Substitution limits are set per rulebook, not universally, and coaches who move between school and club seasons trip over the differences constantly.

The current landscape

• High school (NFHS): 18 team substitutions per set.
• NCAA women's college: 15 per set.
• USAV club: historically 12 per set, with recent seasons moving toward 18 in many regions — check the current season's rulebook for your division.

The libero wrinkle

The libero — the defensive specialist in the contrasting jersey — does not count against the substitution limit. What "illegal rotation" actually means

Your six players must be in correct serving-order position at the moment of serve. Being out of position — an overlap — is a fault that costs the rally.
